The Sacramento Water Forum is in the process of renegotiating the terms of the Water Forum Agreement, which establishes a partnership amongst regional stakeholders with a commitment to both securing regional water supply reliability and the protection of the Lower American River. The challenges posed to the region by climate change will require a diverse set of solutions and comprehensive understanding of the potential benefits of each in order to guide negotiations and discussions.

Project Description

Overarching goals of the project:

  1. Improve understanding of the barriers and relative effectiveness related to outdoor water conservation measures (i.e. turf conversion, irrigation incentives).
  2. Provide regional stakeholders with meaningful information to guide the formulation water supply reliability solutions.

Role of the Fellow in the project:

  1. Research and documentation
  2. Public engagement in the form of attendance at regional events

Desired project outcomes in terms of resources developed (e.g., reports, plans, networks, etc.)

  1. A summary report documenting the findings of the research

How these resources will help increase the agency’s capacity to address the resilience challenges you described in the previous section.

  1. Outdoor water conservation is an area of heightened interest as a potential regional water supply solution. The findings of the research will help to inform discussions and negotiations related to the Water Forum Agreement.
Desired Skills

The ideal Fellow will have a familiarity and understanding of water resources principles including hydrology, irrigation efficiency, and water distribution and collection systems.
Experience and interest in conducting research and completing technical writing.
Experience and proficiency with numeric data analysis and processing tools and methods (i.e., Excel, Access).

Organization & Community Highlights

The Water Forum culture is one of collaboration, dedication, and passion. The team is comprised of individuals who are committed to the betterment of the lower American River and who want to work together and support one another towards achieving that goal.

Working with the Water Forum will expose the Fellow to a wide range of water resources topics and issues, including: demand management, drought mitigation, municipal water operations, fisheries and wildlife needs, and balancing the needs of stakeholders within a watershed. The Fellow will join a dynamic team of professionals with diverse expertise and will have the opportunity to interact and collaborate with a broad stakeholder group.

Sacramento is renowned for its easy-going atmosphere, booming economy, amazing food, an abundance of wineries and breweries, and plenty of things to do. Sacramento is known as America’s “Farm-to-Fork” Capital because the area ships produce all over the nation and has 40 local farmers markets stocked full of local finds. In addition, Sacramento is located a two-hour drive from both San Francisco and Lake Tahoe which offer great opportunities for weekend adventures.

Remote or On-Site Placement

At this time, it is expected that the Fellow would have the choice of serving in-office or remotely. We are following the appropriate City of Sacramento guidelines in terms of workplace safety.
