Service Needs & Plans

The Fellow will be responsible for planning and/or implementing various climate mitigation and adaptation measures with the City of Emeryville. Areas of focus will include urban forest plan implementation, building electrification, GHG tracking, climate adaptation including regional sea level rise planning, outreach and community-building, and various environmental services performed by small cities including stormwater management and urban forest implementation.

Project Description

Projects as currently planned include:

  • Implementing the City’s Urban Greening Plan, which will begin planting in fall 2024. Public outreach and engagement will be a big part of this project
  • Implementing solar & storage upgrades at one or more City facilities, using existing data, developing more as necessary with the help of experts, and preparing purchasing/installation specifications
  • Conducting a greenhouse gas inventory, and potentially re-framing our inventory tools and measures
  • Support and/or develop new community events such as Coastal Cleanup and Bike to Work Day, potentially including a City-wide yard sale in advance of a bulky pickup event and also potentially working with an outside agency consultant on outreach with community and tribes on proposed sea level rise adaptation project
  • If it’s a fit, the Fellow may be involved with GIS work, graphic design for outreach, and other specialties
  • Opportunities to engage on a wide variety of other sustainability programs and projects including stormwater management/green infrastructure, active transportation infrastructure planning, foodware initiatives including reusables
Desired Skills

This isn’t a requirement, but GIS capability is desirable. To some extent, we can match the projects to the Fellow’s abilities and interests, because there’s much to do!

Organization & Workplace Highlights

The work culture in Emeryville is collaborative and supportive. A lot of work is done across department lines, and staff take on a wide range of responsibilities on a variety of topics. We work closely with regional partners in other jurisdictions on many projects and programs as well. The organization and the staff value equity and inclusion highly, and we are seen as a model for cities hoping to expand housing opportunities, with a focus on affordable and/or family-friendly housing. Our bike/ped infrastructure efforts are also widely noted. The City Council is fully supportive of sustainability and applies a justice/equity/diversity/inclusion lens on staff’s work.

Community Highlights

Emeryville is a unique city – small and dense, in the middle of a region that is moving quickly on sustainability efforts. The city staff is small and the advantage to that is much less bureaucracy than in some cities, and opportunities to work with peers in related disciplines. It’s a vibrant place.
