Mobilizing Climate Leadership in the Southeast, Puerto Rico, and Hawaii

For the last ten years, CivicSpark has helped over 300 communities in California, Washington, and Colorado accelerate their climate response while providing a launchpad for almost 1000 emerging leaders. In 2023, CivicSpark embarked on a national planning process to consider expanding into the Southeastern United States, Puerto Rico, and Hawaii.

Program Design

CivicSpark recruits Fellows through a highly competitive application process. Fellows spend 11 months embedded in government agencies and community organizations, serving 1,300+ hours implementing a needed community resilience project, while also building long-term capacity to ensure the work is sustained after their service year. Fellows also develop leadership skills through participating in professional development and community service activities throughout the service year.

Expansion Timeline

  • September – December 2023: Outreach, program design, and applying for operational funding
  • January – March 2024: Continued outreach and initial partner recruitment
  • March – May 2024: Program launch and recruitment
  • September 2024: CivicSpark program starts in expansion states
